I also like reading romantic fanfiction, from cutesy fluff to hardcore ohmygodwhydidIread thiswhydidyouwritethis. Real books I enjoy sci-fi, mystery, and fantasy. Of course, any story that can make me laugh or gets me emotionally involved I'm hooked.
Sometimes I suddenly have an idea, think "hey, this'd make a great character", and build on it from there. Mostly, though, I think about what I'm looking for, i.e. a certain look or feel or personality, and try to fill in the rest until it makes sense and clicks as a whole character in my mind.
10. What are some really weird situations your characters have been in? Everything from serious canon scenes to meme questions counts!
In a meme question one of my characters thought it'd be a good idea to drag a thirteen year old boy to a bar and flirt. Needless to say, the others didn't take it too well.
11. Who is your favourite character to write? Least favourite?
Spoons Barclay. I don't write him, persay; I roleplay with him. He is by far the easiest character to write for; I know exactly what he'd say in do in a situation given his personality/profession/habits/etc. and it can range from grave and serious to the most ridiculous things ever. I love how roleplaying with him comes so naturally, although sometimes I just have to take a step back and reign it in if I think he's getting too much into one of the extremes.
My least favorite is Orquidea Castillo, ironically from the same verse. She is practically the polar opposite of me, and while her attitude looks good on paper, when roleplaying it comes off as too overbearing for my tastes which isn't quite what I wanted her to be. Her history came before her personality for me, while Spoons was the opposite. Maybe that's why she's giving me difficulty. XD
12. In what story did you feel you did the best job of world building?
Earl n' Meyer. That is probably the most effort I've ever given to the setting of a story.
13. What's your favourite culture to write, fictional or not?
One where there's a wide gap between rich and poor, where you're either blissfully living it up and sneering down on the vermin of the world, or you're the vermin of the world struggling just to make it through each day. That's probably because it's not only easy to write (geez I don't challenge myself, do I?) but I enjoy torturing characters immensely.
14. How do you map out locations, if needed? Do you have any to show us?
If it gets bigger than a certain area or key points, I end up scribbling it out because I can't keep track of it in my head. Then I dislike what I've done and scrap that idea and change the setting. Usually though, I manage to keep track of it in my head, so nothing to show.
15. Mid way question! Tell us about a writer you admire, whether professional or not!
Er, lots of writers. I'm no good with names. But generally any that have written a book? XD If you've gotten a book published, then I'm already in awe of you for managing (what seems to me anyway) a huge feat.
16. Do you write romantic relationships? How do you do with those, and how "far" are you willing to go in your writing?
Yes. I suck at it. I tried sex scenes a couple of times... I can't do atmosphere right and it ends up blah. What's going on in my head doesn't seem to translate well when I try and put it into a story. XD
17. Favourite protagonist and why!
Edward Elric, because he's hilarious but beyond dedicated, and while he's got a bit of a temper he is still really mature and smart. He's got the brains to back up his brawn and defy his age; he generally breaks your first impression of him whichever it may be.
Also Jean Kirschtein. Can you say character development? ewe
18. Favourite antagonist and why!
Scar from TLK. He actually won and got his way, for quite some time, too. Granted, he didn't do a very good job once he was king, but he still reached his goal.
Dr. Horrible of Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog. Just look at that title. Plus Neil Patrick Harris. Seriously.
Sesshoumaru from InuYasha because reasons.
Does Russia count? Even though I hate him being portrayed as the evil bad guy?19. Favourite minor that decided to shove themself into the spotlight and why!
MARCO BODT BECAUSE FRECKLED JESUS. I don't think he counts as a minor character anymore? Still... Augh, just let me go cry in a corner for a thousand years, please.
Prussia. That dude is friggin AWESOME. Is he a minor character either? IDK. But that just goes to show, even though you should probably be dead because you don't technically exist anymore, doesn't mean you should listen. ( ;3
b
The Cannibals in Earl n' Meyer. The little shits are growing on me. :,3
20. What are your favourite character interactions to write?
How to scare the shit out of or break each other. Mmm, violence~ Oh gosh, and when one character is completely embarrassed, for whatever reason!
21. Do any of your characters have children? How well do you write them?
Well, Spoons is gettin' hitched and they're hoping for a child. None of my OCs have children, though, or are in a relationship for that matter, with I think two exceptions that I don't think can produce children? Depends on how I want physics to work for them or if they adopt. XD
22. How long does it usually take you to complete an entire story—from planning to writing to posting (if you post your work)?
Not including school-required short stories? Um.... Four one-shot fanfictions. o-o That is literally all the stories I have completed. They took me a couple days or weeks, either because I needed to sleep at some point or because I was having my much-better-fic-writer friend "help" (she never helps when I need her the lazy bum). I have half a gajillion stories in progress or doomed never to be finished.
23. How willing are you to kill your characters if the plot so demands it? What's the most interesting way you've killed someone?
I'd try to figure out the most dramatic way of them dying that would move the plot along while scarring either the reader or characters. I haven't killed off too many characters though, only technically one? And it wasn't that important for the plot, I just wanted some violence.
24. Do any of your characters have pets? Tell us about them.
Hm. In a way a couple of mine have pets, be it master to slave-type deal, or these-are-my-only-friends, or sentient body part. But I have one character for sure that has a cat. His cat is used for grumpy comic relief. XD
25. Let's talk art! Do you draw your characters? Do others draw them? Pick one of your OCs and post your favourite picture of him!
I draw 'em more than I write about 'em. Only recently have I asked others to draw them, and usually it's my MTT-universe ones.
Why would you make me pick an OC? D: Besides, I'm too lazy to go through art of them and attempt to pick a favorite
26. Along similar lines, do appearances play a big role in your stories? Tell us about them, or if not, how you go about designing your characters.
Depends on the character, really. I do try to keep their appearances in mind when writing about them, though.
27. Have you ever written a character with physical or mental disabilities? Describe them, and if there's nothing major to speak of, tell us a few smaller ones.
Sort of. I have a number of insane/crazy characters, but there are those like Eryt and Ellie who just kind of snapped (although Ellie was gradual) and they went on different spectrums (one's a crazy killer, the other's just really happy and doesn't seem phased by horrific scenes). There's Sugar, who can't focus for long (maybe ADD?), Kiku with something of an OCD streak I think(obsessed with organization), and quite a few of my characters might be considered clinically depressed. I haven't actually given any of them labels besides Nell being alcoholic, if that counts, Ebah who has a literal split personality and her brother Noin who is kind of delusional/schizophrenic/idk and has an unhealthy obsession over her. I just consider these things parts of their personalities.
Physically there is Raccoon, who is missing an eye. Several times I have thought about making a blind, deaf, or mute character or one that is missing a limb or some such. But then I always think "that is such a cliche way to make them 'unique'" and end up not doing it.
28. Final question! Tag someone! And tell us what you like about that person as a writer and/or about one of his/her characters!
Pretty much the only writers whose characters and writing I know were the ones whose tags ended up at me. o.o So if you're writer, feel free to do this! ^w^
